The tournament was held in Baden-Baden from July 18 to August 4, 1870.

Each participant played two games against each other, in the form of mini matches with two games in a row.

Adolf Stern (20) played only four games and then left the tournament because, as a Bavarian reservist, he went to the Franco-Prussian War, which had broken out on July 19. His games were not scored.

A request by Minckwitz to abort the tournament because of the fighting taking place only about 30 kilometers away was rejected.

For the first time chess clocks were used in this tournament. Twenty moves had to be made in one hour. However, the clocks did not have "flags" yet. Louis Paulsen overstepped the time in his game against De Vere in a won position, but De Vere refused to win the game in this way. It was agreed to repeat the game.

Draw was scored with half a point.

Anderssen (52) won the tournament with a score of 11 out of 16 and earned 3000 Francs.

Second, half a point behind, was Steinitz (34). Steinitz earned 600 Francs.

The third place with 10 points was shared by Gustav Neumann (31) and Blackburne (28). Each received 200 francs.

Anderssen lost both games against Neumann, but won both games against Steinitz.

Cecil de Vere (24), the first Britisch Champion in 1866, finished sixth behind Louis Paulsen (37). He died of tuberculosis four and a half years later.
