The tournament was held in Zurich and in Neuhausen, Swiss, from August 29 to October 24, 1953.
It was the second Candidates Tournament organised by FIDE.
The tournament was a fifteen-player double round-robin.
Smyslov (32) won the tournament with 18/28, two points ahead of Bronstein, Keres and Reshevsky.
Nine of the 15 contenders came from the Soviet Union. Only two of the six non-Soviet players finished in the top half of the table (Reshevsky in joint second place, Najdorf in joint sixth). The remaining four non-Soviet players - Szabo, Gligoric, Euwe and Stahlberg - finished at the bottom of the table.
The prize money for first place was 5,000 Swiss francs.
The first seven rounds were played in the church parish hall in Neuhausen. From round eight onwards, the games were played in the Chamber Music Hall of the German Congress Centre in Zurich.
Bronstein's tournament book on Zurich 1953 is considered a classic of chess literature.
