World Champion 1963-69
Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) became the 9th World Champion in chess history after defeating defending champion Mikhail Botvinnik in a competitive match in 1963. In 1969 he lost the title to Boris Spassky. However, even after losing the world title, Petrosian remained one of the best players in the world for a long time and took part in the fight for the world championship several more times.
