World Champion 1975-85
After Fischer failed to show up for the world championship match, Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) became the 12th world chess champion. He subsequently justified his title win without a fight with countless tournament victories. He fought epic battles against Viktor Korchnoi and Garry Kasparov for the world title from 1978 to 1990.
