Siegbert Curt Tarrasch, born on 5 March 1862 in Breslau, died on 17 February 1934 in Munich. Tarrasch had learned to play chess during his school years in Breslau. He studied medicine in Berlin and was good friends there with Berthold Lasker, the brother of Emanuel Lasker. A doctor by profession, Tarrasch took part in many important tournaments, some of which he won. Around 1890 he was probably the world's best player, but in 1894 he had to decline an invitation to a world championship match against Wilhelm Steinitz for professional reasons. In 1908 Tarrasch played against Emanuel Lasker for the World Championship, but lost. In 1927 he played for Germany at the Chess Olympiad on the first board. Tarrasch was an important theoretician and successful book author. Some of his textbooks are classics of chess literature.
