Reuben Fine (11 October 1914 - 26 March 1993) was one of the strongest chess players in the world from the mid-1930s until his retirement from chess in 1951. His greatest success was the 1938 AVRO tournament, one of the strongest tournaments of all time, where he shared first place with Paul Keres but finished second on a tie-break.
Although Fine tried to make a living as a professional chess player, he eventually decided on a career in psychology. In 1951 he began an academic career in psychology, became a professor, published a number of books on psychology and books on the relationship between chess and psychology.
He also wrote a number of popular chess books, but despite his many successes in international tournaments, he never managed to win the US Championship.
