Frank Marshall (10 August 1877 - 9 November 1944) was one of the strongest players in the world at the beginning of the 20th century. He was US champion from 1909 to 1936, but his greatest success was probably his victory at Cambridge Springs in 1904 with a score of 13/15, two points ahead of Dawid Janowsky and world champion Emanuel Lasker.
In 1915 Marshall opened the famous Marshall Chess Club in New York City, which still exists today.
Known for his tactical and swindling skills, Marshall also contributed to opening theory. The Marshall Attack in the Ruy Lopez (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5) is named after him, as is the Marshall Gambit in the Slav Defence: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e6 4.e4!?
