Anders Gideon Tom Stahlberg, born on 26 January 1908 in Nödinge, near Gothenburg. After completing his studies, he became Swedish national champion for the first time in 1927, together with Gösta Stoltz. He won the championship again in 1929 and 1939. In 1929 he also became Nordic champion. He gained international notoriety through matches against Efim Bogoljubow (1930), Rudolf Spielmann (1930 and 1934) and Aron Nimzowitsch (1935). He finished on the podium at the international tournaments in Dresden in 1936 and Stockholm in 1937. In 1938 he played a match against Paul Keres to a draw. After the 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires, he remained in Argentina until 1948 and won a number of tournaments there. Between 1928 and 1964 he took part in seventeen Chess Olympiads, winning bronze with the team in 1933 and silver in 1935. In 1933 and 1952 he won bronze and silver in the individual classification. In 1950 he qualified for the Candidates Tournament in Budapest. In the same year he was appointed grandmaster by FIDE. Stahlberg was also an international arbiter and author of a number of books. He died on 26 May 1967 in Leningrad, where he was about to play in a tournament, as a result of a heart attack.
