The tournament lasted 6 weeks, taking place from May 30 to July 10, 1899. 15 participants played a double round-robin. The games were played in St. Stephen's Hall, a hall of the Royal Westminster Aquarium. The time control was 1 hour for 15 moves.
World Champion Emanuel Lasker won the tournament by a margin of 4.5 points. Lasker scored 22.5 points from 27 games. Lasker got £250 and a gold medal. Lasker received the beauty prize for his victory with Black against Steinitz.
Lasker's first place ranks among a series of tournament victories after he dethroned Steinitz as world champion in 1894: St. Petersburg 1895/96, Nuremberg 1896, Paris 1900. Second place with 18 points each was shared by Janowski, Maroczy and Pillsbury.
Teichmann had to withdraw after his fourth game due to an eye disease. His remaining games from the first cycle were counted as a loss. Tarrasch and Charousek were invited, but did not participate. Burn canceled his participation on the opening day. The 63-year-old former world champion Steinitz finished only tenth and for the first time did not receive a prize at a tournament. He died about a year later in New York.
At the same time, a single-round-robin tournament with 12 players was held, which Frank Marshall won with 8.5 points.
