World Champion 1886 - 1894
The first world champion in chess history was Willhelm Steinitz, who won against Zukertort in 1886 and held the title until 1894.
Steinitz is considered the founder of the positional school. Many of his theorems have not lost their validity to this day.
He was born 1836 in Prague (Bohemia). He died in New York in 1900.
