In the 1980s the Italian Game became somewhat more popular again when a system was developed in which White starts by developing modestly with d3 and c3. This is called the Giuoco Pianissimo, or "very slow game". The philosophy behind this plan is that the central advance d3-d4 can also be played later, and in a much more effective fashion. Fundamentally, White will follow a strategy which resembles that employed in many variations of the Closed Ruy Lopez. The game may at first develop more slowly than in the lines of the Greco-Möller Attack, but the system is positionally a sound one, the effects are long-lasting and dangerous.
