The tournament was held in New York from March 16 to April 18, 1924. Eleven players played a double round-robin. The tournament was organized by the Manhattan Chess Club. The playing venue was the Hotel Alamac.
To reduce the influence of preparation on the games, the numbers of the rounds were drawn twenty minutes before the start of the round.
Lasker (55) won the tournament with a score of 16/20. 1.5 points ahead of the world champion Capablanca (35). He won all the "mini-matches" except the one against Capablanca (0.5/2). The Capablanca-Lasker game, round 14, was Lasker's only defeat in the tournament. Lasker received $1500 as first prize plus travel expenses.
Capablanca finished second (14.5 points, $1000), Alekhine (32) third (12 points, losses to Lasker and Reti). This was exactly the same ranking as in St. Petersburg 1914, ten years ago.
The beauty prizes were awarded to Reti, Marshall and Capablanca (Reti-Bogoljubov, Marshall-Bogoljubov, Capablanca-Lasker). Reti was the only player to beat Capablanca. He played his new opening 1.Nf3 and won in 31 moves. This was Capablanca's first defeat since 1916.
Reti played 1.Nf3 in his ten games as White and scored 7.5 points, beating not only Capablanca but also Alekhine and all the other participants except Maroczy (draw), Lasker (loss) and Marshall (loss). Tartakower played the unusual 1.b4 in his game against Maroczy (draw).
After New York 1924, Lasker could still achieve some good rankings in major tournaments, but it was to be his last triumph as a tournament winner.
Alekhine's tournament book on New York 1924 became a classic of chess literature.
